Deep Geothermal Energy: The Géoscan Project Reveals the Potential of Western and Southern Île-de-France

The first results of the french Géoscan research program have just been released! We now have an initial idea of the areas most favorable to the development of deep geothermal energy in western and southern Île-de-France.

Led by the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME), the Directorate General for Energy and Climate, and the French Geological Survey (BRGM), with the support of local authorities, this unprecedented geophysical data acquisition campaign covered nearly 2,000 square kilometers. Three hundred municipalities were involved. The objective: to enable municipalities to take ownership of this resource and integrate it into their strategic planning for decarbonizing heating.

In the Île-de-France region, nearly 45% of final energy consumption is linked to heating needs, which still rely heavily on fossil fuels. While the Île-de-France region boasts the highest concentration of geothermal installations in Europe, with 54 active installations projected for 2025, the western and southern parts of the region are significantly less well-served. The

reason? A long-standing incomplete understanding of the subsoil. At a time when energy independence is more crucial than ever, the results of the Géoscan project could be a game-changer!
